I'm not sure. Three people are dead, and three people are now partnerless. It could go up to four depending on what happens tomorrow.

... Yeah. It's all a big mess. I thought one at a time was bad enough.

Personally, I'd rather not die. But I'm sure that's how most people feel.

[He really doubts they're going to minimize the damages from this week. No matter how he looks at it, there's going to be a couple people dead because they won't have a partner.]

For what it's worth, I don't really want you to die, either.

[ he gives a sigh, rubbing the back of his neck. ]

This is... a whole mess.

I don't know if I have that much of a choice this week. But I do appreciate the thought.

[The fire in his hand flares before he extinguishes it.]

That's a good word for it. A mess. It would be easier if we could fight the darkness more directly than this.

It really would be. Y'know, when we first got here, I thought that's exactly what we were gonna be doing. The whole scrounging for scraps of info while horrible stuff happens around us is... I've kinda done my time with that, and I didn't miss it.

So you've been in this situation before.

It's not a pleasant position to find yourself in. [he rubs at his right arm and looks up at the sky.] I know a little bit of it. The corruption in the system that we needed to find and fight. Getting the universe back on track through battle. That's familiar to me.

[This whole deal? It isn't.]

It's a lot easier when all you've got to do is find a target and beat it up until it sticks.

[ why can't they just do that here? life unfair. ]

... But right now, we got no choice but to suck it up.

I vastly prefer that.

[Unfortunately, that's not what they're getting here.]

We have to work with what we're given, much as I dislike it.

There's this saying back home. No matter how deep the darkness, there's a light that never goes out. Kinda corny, but...

Just because it's corny doesn't mean it isn't true. There's usually a spark of good, even when things become dire.

I'll keep that in mind.

The darkness here can't hide itself forever.

The more information we can gather, the better. Maybe it'll reveal something the next time we purify someone.

...I can tell you one thing I know. The special partner power isn't the only extra power hanging around. There's others, but I couldn't get Lune and Sol to tell me what they are right now.

Is it one of those things that they can't talk about? Where they sound like they're being muffled? Did they say how many there were?

They said they couldn't tell me how many yet, so yeah, they were being muffled. They know about it, but the universe wants a little more time to keep it under wraps, I guess.

[ shrugs? ]

That's a strange thing to want to keep secret.

[But what does he know about this universe? Very little.]

Isn't everything in this place?

[ like. why are there even secrets when they're supposed to fix this. it's like the universe doesn't WANT to be fixed ]

You'd think the universe would be more willing to give up its secrets if it wants us to help.

Right? And yet, here we are. Scrounging for scraps.

Who knew a universe would be the discourteous type?

Yeah. I guess it turns out the universe has a lousy personality. Maybe that's why the darkness got to it.
