[in turn, there's the tiniest hint of a lopsided smile, though it's extremely brief. for all that he talked shit? he did sort of like hisoka, a little, underneath everything. he was interesting.

You should have just taken direct action without outright fighting him or riling him up further.

[he just shrugs, like an asshole, because the fact that everyone else suffered hisoka more is honestly a little bit enjoyable right now.]

So, alright, that explains the Hisoka thing. An' I'm guessing you're not interested in sharing on the Four stuff?

That depends on just what you mean. I did share-- though that's hardly the impression I wanted to give.

[and he absolutely looks annoyed about it. god, he hated the forced fear.]

I wasn't afraid of her, but we're never going to be able to work together. We never were, even before this came out.

[ he grimaces a little himself at the forced fear reminder. he's... not a big fan of those powers. ]

Kind of a big difference between not being able to work with someone an' trying to frame 'em for murder, ain't there? It took me nearly a decade to get to that level with my old coworkers.

She took pleasure in killing people like myself. Those she could see as deserving of it.

[there's no joking on his end-- his words are all entirely serious, there.]

Paired or not, I've always been certain she'd take my life if she were corrupted, or thought I was. She's said from the start she wishes to stamp it out-- she was willing to kill for that if need be.

[ he listens to it all quietly. it's not that long ago that he'd have done something similar to ensure his own survival, is it? but, on the other hand... ]

It's not like she's the only one in this place like that.

She's the only one like this. It isn't work to her, and it isn't just a sense of satisfaction she'd get from it.

[his grip on the sake jug tightens, slightly.]

When she told me she'd kill if she learned any of us were corrupted-- she was laughing. Giggling like she thought it sounded fun. And she still thinks she's doing it for justice.

That girl is not who she lets everyone else see-- I don't think she ever stopped being angry last week, except when I was afflicted.

[there's another long pause, there.]

If you ask me, with a sense of false justice like that? She very well could have been who you were all looking for-- not that you'll believe I'm not just saying that because of our situation. If she hasn't killed already, she will.

[ ... there's a long pause as he assesses all of that. he doesn't say anything for a while. ]

... Can't see how you'd have anything to gain by lying to me about all that.

[ it's pensive. he's not stating outright that he believes shirasu, but he doesn't seem to doubt him, either. ]

So why not just try and kill her outright? Either way, you were hoping for the partner thing to save you. Is she that much stronger than you?

To reduce the amount of bodies, and spares without partners. If I killed her and Kazuaki, my risk of death due to being unpaired went up-- and if the plan failed, I was still safe as long as we weren't caught.

[he looks a little offended, actually, because-]

She wouldn't have been hard to kill. There was just less personal risk involved... well, and then there's her position, but I didn't know that until after framing her.

But why kill Kazuaki too? What, was there a contract on his head?

[wagashis]

Did you think I meant to leave my partner entirely up to chance, after her?

I think we'd have worked well enough. The trouble's just keeping him alive.
