Okay. People are comprised of three things. Hearts, bodies, souls. Hearts are emotions, good and bad. Some other stuff, too, maybe, but that gets kinda complicated and theoretical, 'cause no one really knows the details. The darkness back home targets people's hearts and ... basically takes them. People disappear, the tainted hearts create more darkness, yadda yadda yadda.

Sometimes, if the heart was strong enough, the husk left behind doesn't just vanish, though. It kinda... animates itself through sheer will. Kinda goes against all forces of nature, but there you go, that's what a Nobody is.

I'd have just been gone altogether if my heart hadn't been freed of the darkness.
