I have to deal with that whether I like it or not - but why would one piece of technology be able to reach other worlds when I've never heard of it?

Well, for one thing, it's kinda new. There's really not that many people who have access to it, and all of 'em are world travelers.

Hmmm... Most people aren't meant to be aware of other worlds, to be honest. From experience, that knowledge falling into the wrong hands has kinda led to a lot of bad things happening for a pretty long time.
